Faces in the Crowd

There were lots and lots of people there to line the road into Jerusalem on that Palm Sunday 2,000 years ago- but not everyone was there for the same reason- or even the right reason.  Behind every face in that crowd was a motivation for being there... what were those motivations? Were they all good? Were they bad? Can we find our own face in that crowd? Listen here as we explore these questions and more.

    The Servant Conquers, Part 1
The first story we read in our text this morning is a very familiar one but that doesn’t imply that we have exhausted the well of truth to be drawn from it.  There is much yet to be learned here and today we will touch on some of that truth and will come away with a new understanding of Christ’s victory over the danger of trial and storms.  From there we will move into Mark chapter 5 and see there Christ’s victory over the demonic forces oppressing the Gaderene Demoniac.  Overall, what we’ll see both this week and next is that God’s servant Jesus Christ is the Master of every situation and the conqueror of every enemy- and if we trust Him and obey His orders, we will never need to be afraid.

    The Servant Brings the New

Last week we discussed how Jesus told the religious leaders that He did not come to prop up or re-build the old system of law and tradition, but He came to do something new. This week, and we move into Mark chapters 3 & 4 we see what the new means- Jesus came to Found a New Nation, Establish a New Family, and Announce a New Kingdom.  Listen here to learn more.

    God’s Servant Has Come

This message launches a new series that will take us through the Gospel of Mark.  The Theme of Mark is Jesus, God’s Servant.  As we travel through this book we’ll pause to notice the example of loving service that Christ models for us and we’ll look for ways to imitate His actions.  Today, as the book begins we’ll see that Mark lays out 3 important facts for us- the Servant’s Identity, His Authority, and His Sympathy.  Listen here for more.

Sins of the Saints Part 2

Arthur Pink told a story of how a woman once scolded him for preaching too much about the sins in the church and too little, in her estimation, about the sins of the world. “Don’t you know that the sins of the saints are different?” she asked.  Pink quickly agreed: “Yes, they’re much worse,” he replied.  Malachi also concentrated his ministry on the sins of God’s people.  Last week we learned about the sins of Small Love and Inadequate Fear- this week we’ll see 2 more as we move into Malachi chapter 2.

    A Knitting Season
Last year the elders at Reidsville Alliance
felt that God was giving us new vision; that He was calling us to practice and to grow in the ministry of encouragement.  Today we launch into our 4th
Season of Encouragement- A Knitting Season.  We’ll examine today what Paul meant in Colossians 2 when he said he desired to see the church encouraged as our hearts were knit together in love.  What does that mean? How do we accomplish it? What steps do we need to take.  Listen here to find out!

From the Valley to the Mountain Top
When we last left the prophet Habakkuk in chapter 1 he was in the valley of despair, wrestling with doubt and questions. The end of the book, however, reveals a prophet standing in hope on the mountain peaks say “yet will I rejoice in my God”.  Clearly something miraculous has taken place; something has changed to lead Habakkuk from the valley to the mountain- what was it? What changed? Did God change the situation? Did He give Habakkuk the answer he sought? Or was it something else? Let’s study the 2nd and 3rd  chapters of this short book to find out.

    Can I question God?

There have been times in my life when I have struggled understanding God’s plan; I’ve wondered what He’s doing; I’ve questioned why He allowed certain things.  I’ve also felt bad at times for grappling with those things, because after all, I was raised thinking that questioning God and wrestling with doubt is sinful… and maybe you have, too.  The book of Habakkuk is will be a good book for those of us who know about questions and who know what the pain of struggling is like.  Listen here to see what Habakkuk’s experience teaches us.  Is it ok to question God?

    The Servant Came to Meddle
It’s been said that when the pastor is talking
about other people’s sins that’s preaching, but when he talks about my sins, well that’s meddling- and we don’t like.  That must have been how the religious leaders in the Temple must have felt when Jesus told them the parable of the vineyard in Mark chapter 12- they must have felt like He was meddling.  And in truth- HE WAS! Jesus didn’t come to us so He could spend His time talking about the worlds sins and make God’s people feel good in comparison- He came to put His finger on the sins that are common among religious people and lead us to repentance.  Listen here today to see how the Servant Meddles.
