Powerful Speech

Powerful SpeechWords are powerful, therefore how we use them is very important.  The man or woman who has "put on the New Life of Christ" must put off the old speech patterns of the flesh and take up a new way of speaking.  In chapter 4 of Colossians here Paul suggests 3 specific ministries of speech that the those in Christ should take up.

    The Well-Dressed Family

Well Dressed FamilyA call has been sounded in the Chapter 3 of this letter to the Colossians- but what is the call to?  It's a call to live in the new, Spirit-empowered life of Christ! A call to lay aside the old grave clothes of sin and the flesh and live in the new! And as we begin to walk in Spirit we will find that some of the very first places the impact will be felt is in our family relationships.  Paul tells us today in this passage what that will look like and we'll also learn we NEED the Spirit's power to make is true in our lives.

    Putting on New Clothes

Putting on the new clothesOur motivations for how we dress are many.  Sometimes it's the occasion that determines the clothing, or maybe it's the people we are going to see.  Other times we dress to impress and other times the place we're going helps us pick the outfit.  In this 3rd chapter of Colossians Paul begins to address the motivation for putting on the New Clothes of Christ: why should we take off the old grave clothes of sin and the flesh and put on the new life of Christ? Here's your motivation...

    Believer Behavior
The 3rd chapter of this letter begins with the word "therefore".  Therefore is a connecting word; it serves to show us that there must be a connection between what is being written with what was written.  The first 2 chapters of Colossians dealt with doctrine- with what we believe. What does Paul say our doctrine must connect with? Our behavior.  What we believe must impact how we behave... and in this passage we'll see that Paul gives us 3 directions to help sync those things up.

    Saints Alert, Saints Alive
As the shepherd of the church Paul was defending the Colossian believers by fighting the wolves.  Paul's goal in the second chapter of his letter was to give the church divine truth upon truth upon which they could stand and he also gave them some encouragement about how they could avoid the traps of false teaching and sin.  Listen here to see what Paul says to this church.

    The Audacious Apostle
As Paul concludes chapter one of this letter to the Colossians he gives the church his resume: the reasons why they should hear him. As he does he says some pretty incredible stuff- and we may be tempted to think that the Apostle may be embellishing... but we would be wrong.  All that he says is true- including the most audacious statement found in verse 24.  Listen hear to see what he says and how it impacts the church today.

    Confidence for the Confused
There was a great deal of confusion present in the Colossian church; false teachers were filling young believer's mind with lies which caused them to doubt who they were in Christ, what was expected of them in this life, and even doubt where they were ultimately going.  Paul's words today provide confidence for the confused and show us what the work of Christ on the cross means to our identity and destination.

    The Preeminent Christ
In today's message we learn that false teachers in the Colossian Church were trying to steal something- they were using a diversion and trying to rob the church of valuable truth.  Paul writes to set things straight and in the process he helps us to recover some valuable truth about the Superiority and the Preeminence of Jesus Christ!

    A “Growing” Prayer List
In our passage today we find Paul's prayer list for the the Colossians- it's a list of things Paul is praying that they would grow in.  This is a prayer list we would do well to make our own and it make it our Growing prayer list.

    Retracing Our Steps
As Paul opens the letter to the Colossians he helps retrace their steps in the Gospel hoping to bring them back to the basics and pull them away from some of the problems present in the church.  It's a helpful exercise for us as well for we will find that our steps in the Gospel are the same as their's- and perhaps retracing our steps will be good for us as well.
